A man on my project hated me. And I had no idea why. What helped me…? My Player Card. This was my player card when I was a project superintendent. We did personality profiles as a project delivery team. We covered them in team meetings. We posted them on the wall. It helped instantly. Along with the profiles, we each filled out a “This Is Me” document — a simple list of how we interact best with others. That’s where I found the key. He hated emails. He thought they were an irresponsible form of communication. And me? I loved them at the time. Writing an email was like writing a book for me. So I stopped sending him non-essential emails and walked over to talk to him instead. Our relationship repaired. And something else happened. My career started to take off. Not because I got smarter — but because people knew me. They understood my goals. They knew how to work with me, and I knew how to work with them. This post is not about me. It’s about teaming on a construction project. We spend weeks aligning the schedule and minutes aligning the people. Flip that early, and watch what happens.
