Without a written record, the answer depends entirely on someone’s memory of a specific day weeks in the past, and memory degrades in exactly the ways that matter most on a construction project. To do lists organize next steps, punch items, and follow up tasks in a form that actually gets acted on. The work does not get done because someone remembered it in the moment. It gets done because it was written down, checked against later, and marked complete once it actually happened. My father taught me that how you keep your tools says everything about how you do your work. Your field book is a tool. Maybe the most important one you carry, because unlike a physical tool that performs a single task, the field book is the record of every task, every observation, every measurement that everything else on the project depends on being accurate and preserved.
A field book kept sloppily, entries skipped, details recorded vaguely, pages torn out or lost, reflects and often predicts a broader carelessness in how the actual work gets executed. A field book kept with real discipline, consistent daily entries, precise measurements, careful sketches, reflects the same discipline that shows up in how that person actually performs the work itself. The book is not separate from the craftsmanship. It is an expression of it.
