They all flow from the same root cause: people who are genuinely trained, working inside systems built to support them, rather than people thrown at chaos and expected to compensate for it through sheer effort.
Path Two: We Keep Doing What We Are Already Doing
The second path is simply a continuation of the current default. Stay on CPM. Keep the toxic rhythm of rushing, pushing, and panicking that comes with an impossible schedule. Keep failing to genuinely train people, and keep treating that failure as somebody else’s problem to solve.
Down this path, the industry gets worse, not better. It burns out the people already in it faster than new people can be developed to replace them, which means we end up with fewer workers than we have today, not more. That is not a minor inconvenience. It is a direct hit to our GDP, because a country genuinely is what it produces, and construction is one of the sectors that determines how much actually gets built.

These companies need to invest millions, and in some cases hundreds of millions, of dollars into real training facilities and workforce development programs, specifically aimed at bringing back the trades and training the next generation of construction managers. They have both the capital and the direct incentive to do this, since their own data center pipelines depend entirely on having enough skilled people to build them. If they do this at real scale, the entire industry benefits from the ripple effect, not just their own projects. A training facility built to staff one company’s data center pipeline still produces skilled electricians, pipefitters, and construction managers who can carry that training into any project they touch afterward, not just the one that funded their development.
If they do not, the alternative is straightforward and unpleasant. We frustrate the people already trying to work in this industry, and we end up with less capacity than we have right now, at exactly the moment demand for construction, especially around data centers and industrial projects, keeps climbing.

Here is the part that gets missed in a lot of workforce conversations. Training people is necessary, and it is not sufficient on its own. The other half of this equation is the planning system those trained people actually get to work inside.
Continuing to run projects on CPM, with its baked-in trade stacking, trade burdening, and lack of buffers, guarantees that even well trained people get set up to fail. A well trained crew working inside a broken planning system still burns out, still fights unnecessary chaos, and still produces worse results than the same crew working inside a Takt based system with real zones, real flow, and real buffers. Training without the right system is half a solution. So is a good system staffed by people who were never properly trained. Both halves have to move together.
What Getting This Right Actually Produces
If the industry actually commits to both halves, real training investment and a genuine shift away from CPM toward planning systems built on flow, we are set up for a genuinely strong future. Productivity increases become realistic instead of aspirational. Our capacity to maintain GDP through what we actually build becomes achievable instead of a hopeful talking point.
That is not a small claim, and I want to be precise about why I believe it. Productivity gains in this industry have never mainly come from working people harder. They have come from removing the waste, the trade stacking, the improper batch sizes, the unleveled zones, that a properly planned system eliminates by design. Pair that kind of system with people who were actually trained to operate inside it, and the compounding effect is real, not theoretical.
Consider what compounds over a full decade under each path. Ten years of investment in both training and flow based planning produces a workforce that gets measurably more capable every year, working inside systems that keep improving alongside them. Ten years of the current default produces the opposite, a workforce that shrinks every year the industry keeps losing people faster than it replaces them, inside a planning system that guarantees the same crash landing on project after project. The gap between those two outcomes, compounded over a decade, is enormous.

None of this has to wait for a handful of major tech companies to act first, even though their scale would genuinely accelerate the whole industry. Every construction company, at every size, faces the same two paths inside its own operations.
